130 Mile Footpath

Long Distance Trail, the West Highland Way.

Hiking in Scotland, 8 days and bad knees - Glasgow to Fort William.

July 2014, I was turning 26 and had never been to Scotland. I had travelled as far as the Monaro region in Australia, yet never ventured seven car hours North of London. The place of my Father’s birth shares many similarities to Norway; with a low population and dramatic landscapes (be it more hills than mountains). A contrast to South East England, there’s a significantly greater sense of space and a sample of wilderness utterly foreign to London. Collaborating with Julian Holzer on our first trickle of joint aimlessness beyond Tunbridge Wells, we packed our necessities, took a 460 mile/£18 bus and ten hours later, arrived for our night walk out of Glasgow. With a leisurely pace and packing unnecessary weight [6.8kg], we would fight off bad knees that tried to holt our efforts half way through the trip.

Walking down a Scottish hill backwards, we began the new voyage with a spring in every step, but first we needed a Glaswegian’s guidance. After receiving directions North out of the city, we dedicated our early hours to reaching the official start of the trail, Milngavie.

-NORWAY-

Four Months Camping in the North

1990, Dalsnibba.

I first visited Norway in 1990 when I was two years old.

A holiday for my parents, a magical folklore adventure for me. One that obviously has impacted me to this day. This was the only time I'd be overseas with both my parents and indeed a far easier, stable time. Watching flickery VHS video footage from this trip, it's clear there was nothing for me to ever worry about. All my needs were covered. Sitting on my Dad's shoulders as he walked me and my brother to the river and up Dalsnibba on the West coast. My loved Mother would make sure I was fed with all the right nutrition whilst she enjoyed time with her Norwegian friends Snefrid og Trond.

Twenty plus years passed until I decided to go back.

I flew to Norway, a new chapter with one of my eldest and dearest friends. We had little clue what we were doing, no objectives, no skills or prior knowledge, just a suitcase-worthy load in our backpacks and a heavy three man tent.

All weather, all seasons camping.

Arctic winter, 100mph winds and plenty of rain.

-RECOMMENDATIONS-

Accommodation

The discreet art of stealth camping isn’t at all necessary in the most Northerly boundaries of Europe. 'All Man’s Rights/Freedom to Roam/Right to Access' are the English names given to customs heavily practiced in Scandinavia, Scotland and the Baltic nations (which I’m yet to visit). This law of the land allows unrestricted access for hiking and camping to all land that is uncultivated, regardless of who owns it. Restricted by many Western European countries, such freedom and peace of mind massively enhances the experience of hiking and sleeping anywhere outside.

Pack a tent, explore the nature. God tur!

Restaurants

Norwegian supermarkets have free cocoa and coffee variety dispensers. You can pour a latte and walk around the store (repeating as often as necessary), a welcome boost from the cold.

Evergreen – Pilestredet 39, Bislett, Oslo. Irish bar, the cheapest beer prices in the city.

-

Festivals

Ladehammerfestivalen – Våttahaugen, Lade, Trondheim. East of the city harbour, the annual (Summer) music festival is set on an idyllic hill overlooking Trondheimsfjorden. Free admission.

Eat the Rich festivalen – Svartlamon, Trondheim. Punk/D.I.Y festival (Summer) uniquely hosted in Svartlamon, an alternative district and urban ecological experiment. Free admission.

-STEPS TO BECOMING LOST-

Jumping ahead to how this all happened.

Mishaps and contracts.
I snapped.
During my time studying at university in the coastal town of Brighton (East Sussex, England), I had enjoyed living surrounded by countless friends in a vibrant and progressive setting. This liberal coastal town is lively and fun at the quietest of times. I lived with some of my closest mates and endless faces were always coming and going to our house with its door always open. Whilst looking for a house to move into for the final quarter of 2011 and onwards to 2012, I decided to leave. There was never actually a decision but a feeling. I could no longer handle the parties, the living room thumping drum and bass at full volume until dawn most nights a week. I had to go cold turkey, leave the student lifestyle behind and start afresh. Sadly this meant no longer living with my friends and leaving a town I loved. A change from a lifestyle that had treated me so well. I wanted a nice place to live after a year in a house so impressively characterised by disrepair and sleeping in a dangerously damp basement. I`d scrapped through my degree after finishing my final piece in the Autumn, 'Richer with less, the value of money - can simplicity bring greater meaning and value to a UK trapped in consumer society?'
I was no longer needed on the South coast.
One year passed.
I'd moved to Tunbridge Wells (Kent, England) and was working a full-time job bringing me no satisfaction. Everything had become too predictable, too safe, too stable. I was ready for a bigger change, to throw myself into the unfamiliar, to experience living unconventionally.

My first adventure began on foot, carrying a tent,

I wandered relatively long distances hoping to see and achieve something great.

The results were somewhat mixed.

-RECOMMENDATIONS-

Accommodation

Throughout the majority of my experiences in Sweden, I have either camped or Couchsurfed. In many situations whilst hitchhiking through the country, I slept in urban environments with a tent.

I also have experience staying at two hostels in Stockholm, both in very central locations.

For budget travel, I really don’t advise staying in hostels when visiting Sweden. Despite being the highest priced hostels out of every country that I have stayed in, they may actually require that you supply your own bedding. This might be supplied at the foot of the bed on arrival but you will have to pay for it should it be used. Often this is based on trust and the risk of a fine if caught using it without paying. I kept quiet, folded it neatly in the morning and was good to go. I don’t agree with paying for ‘extras’ when you’re already handing over 200kr a night. Alternatively use a travel towel if you carry one. If you hadn’t packed a tent before embarking on this trip, you might soon wish you had.

Couchsurfing in Sweden.

Couchsurfing is a refreshing break from hostels, especially in countries where accommodation is the greatest expense. Find unique experiences through your accommodation choices.

Skanstulls Hostel – Södermalm, Stockholm

I spent only one night in Skanstulls. It helped me tremendously when I arrived in the country to find myself in an uncomfortable and unexpected set of circumstances.

Old Town Hostel – Gamla Stan, Stockholm

Although prices are high for accommodation in Stockholm, I ended up staying a few days here. Old Town Hostel was amongst the cheapest I could find. The location is incredible. As the name states, you will find yourself in the heart of Gamla Stan, old town Stockholm, a picturesque area to explore.

SEPTEMBER 2014.

Using the check-in area to sleep instead of setting up a tent.

-RECOMMENDATIONS-

Accommodation
I have no experience paying for accommodation in Denmark. My time in the country consisted of a hitchhiking trip from one side of the country to the other (the Southern border/Germany to the Eastern border/Sweden). The entire time I slept in my tent in random places, often by the side of the road.
Copenhagen airport is a short walk from the city centre, it is easy to sleep at the arrivals/check in area if you wish to save money on accommodation. I spent one night here despite not having a flight to catch. It served as a good base for the night before crossing the bridge into Sweden the next morning.

-GERMANY-

3000km by Foot and Thumb

Desperate stories in Western Europe and Scandinavia.

A fast Summer and the venture had to continue; this time starting in Köln, Germany. My experience of hitchhiking prior was; a couple of truck rides across Victoria and into South Australia, a break down/petrol station run in New South Wales - Australia, and little more. I'd not before been on a trip of endless hitchhiking with no destination or even direction to mind.

When the thumb takes you beyond your destination.

Transport

I was constantly lost in Dubai but this soon became the point. I found myself walking back and forth with no sense of direction, catching unknown buses and boarding trains at the very last minute.

Dubai buses require a pre-paid travel card which you can buy onboard the first bus at the airport. Make sure to scan out when getting off, if you don’t, this may consume your entire balance, completely draining it to 0 by the time you want to use it again.

Accommodation

Siam Journey – Phaya Thai, Bangkok – volunteer or 300 baht | Favourite guest house throughout all travels (2014).

-Watch : Siam Journey – A Bangkok Alley →

Siam Journey started as a 12 bed guesthouse with a choice of two rooms: an 8 bed and a less spacious 4 bed. Now doubled in size it still holds all its charm whilst accommodating two extra bathrooms and a dining space in addition to a new 10 bed dorm.

Siam Journey is more than a charming sleeping space, it is an experience.

After (_?) months in Bangkok exploring the city in multiple districts, I found no competitor to Siam Journey.

There are cheaper options, sure, but no location or personality has offered any greater time than that spent on the border of Ratchathewi and Phaya Thai.

Where two aspects to the success of this tucked away gem combine to create such a positive feeling are the location and most importantly, the owner and co-workers.

There is so much heart installed into this venture. Nate (founder/owner) shares his social life with his guest (soon to become friends if they stay more than a single night). Every night will be different. Pursuing events and activities to neighbourhoods that Nate wants to get more familiar with and making friends with Bangkok students and couchsurfers. Nate effortlessly invests an awful lot into his connection with his guests.

What I found most unique about Siam Journey was the transparent business behind the guesthouse. Openly sharing future plans and collaborating ideas with guests. I have not experienced anywhere else like this. Siam Journey can make you feel as though you help run the project and do so with upmost enjoyment and purpose. Such an inclusive relationship with the place turns a simple spot to sleep into a creative building where each day is spent with open minded collectives.

The icing on the cake is the neighbourhood. The residents and family restaurants that serve world class food for 30 baht. You will have to restrain your desire to eat, then eat, then eat each day as returning to your favourite table and chair X amount of times in one day becomes relatively embarrassing.

My words may fail me but I can`t speak any more highly about Nate, Siam Journey and Phaya Thai.
